Using the alias Shay Nanigans, the social media sleuth from South Carolina has gained viral attention with videos that have millions of views.
Shay started learning her social media tricks just four weeks ago and has since tested her skills on strangers online who have commented on her TikTok videos asking her to find them and post the results.
“I learned from being catfished by a guy,” she told Newsweek: “I started stalking him online to find out who he really was and learned all the tricks.”
Catfishing refers to when someone sets up a false online profile, often to trick people who are looking for love. As of January 2022, 13 percent of surveyed adults in the U.S. reported that they had definitely interacted with a catfish online, while 17 percent suspected they had probably come into contact with a fake profile in the past.
In one video posted on Thursday, Shay was challenged by TikTok user hauntedsoulbooks who wrote: “I’m literally your first fail, you can’t find me.”
In the video, Shay showed the inside of the TikToker’s home and said: “Found you,” before going into detail about how she cracked the code.
“You were hard to find until I clicked on your link,” she explained.
Shay moves from the link to a contact page, finding the TikToker’s email address and in turn quickly revealing her Facebook page, name, city and voter registration details.
By the time she had the address, she was able to find the Zillow listing for the home and describes the “smoking gun” as the moment she saw pictures and video on the TikToker’s social media inside the home where she could easily match up the Zillow listing images.
Shay explained that her first video was her explaining how she frequently investigates when she sees someone post a picture of a home they have bought on social media.
“I go and find it and see if they’re the real owner,” she said. “People went crazy over that video and someone said I wouldn’t be able to find them because they had new construction, so I made a video showing how easy it was to find them and everyone started asking me to find them after that.”
While Shay doesn’t teach others her tips and tricks, she says it would be pretty easy to learn from her videos. But it isn’t always as straightforward as it looks.
“I’m constantly stumped if somebody doesn’t have any contact information or their account is private,” she said. “It’s really hard to find them if they have a very common name too.”
Despite occasional setbacks, Shay said that often she starts with just Googling.
“Where there is a will there is a way,” she joked.
