Wordle is a browser word puzzle game, currently run by the New York Times. It was an indie title developed by a programmer named Josh Wardle, but Wordle was purchased by the New York Times for seven figures last month. It is still free-to-play for now, but this may change in the coming weeks.

Here’s how to play:

Head to the website. Choose a five-letter English word. There are some best starting words for Wordle, but players can use whatever word they wish to start. Hit enter The letters will highlight green for correct letters, yellow for correct letters in the wrong location, and gray for incorrect letters. Given these clues, players have six total guesses to find the solution before they lose. After completing the puzzle, players can check out their stats like win percentage. There is also a Share button to let other players know how the puzzle went without spoilers. This easy-to-share spoiler-free version of Wordle is probably what makes this puzzle game so viral.
