Wordle is a simple word game with only a handful of rules. While it has seemingly been everywhere, from Wordle being remade in Minecraft to Reddit fans making Wordle-themed birthday cakes, some have yet to play or learn the rules of it. So here’s a breakdown of how to play.

Players need to head to the New York Times games website in order to play. While there are loads of clones and copycats, the original is now hosted on NYT games. To start this browser-based game, players have to choose a great starting word for Wordle; it must be five letters long and needs to be a real English word. Players will also want to choose a word with a variety of letters. Type the starting word into the website and press enter. The letters will change color based on whether they are correct or not to give players some clues as to the real answer. Green letters are right, gray are wrong, and yellow letters are correct but located in the wrong place in the word. Players have a total of six guessed to get the right answer. Once players have completed the puzzle, successfully or not, Wordle players can then check out their Wordle stats. These include win streak, win percentage, guess distribution, max streak, and the time to the next puzzle. This menu also has a spoiler-free Share button for social media. Puzzles reset at midnight every day local time.
